We replaced this Citroën 2CV’s corroded chassis as part of a full restoration, after it failed its MOT from years of daily driving on winter roads. This is one of the biggest upgrades you can do to your 2CV to prepare it for many more years on the road.

This Citroën 2CV failed its MOT because corrosion had taken hold of its chassis. The car had been driven every day, in all weathers, by its previous owner. Years of exposure to wet, salted winter roads had eventually taken their toll.

The new owner wanted to give the 2CV a sound foundation for many more years of use, so they chose a chassis replacement with a galvanised top panel. We sourced a used replacement chassis, then cleaned, primed and painted it to provide additional protection against corrosion.

Removing the body and assessing the parts

The first stage of the 2CV chassis swap was to lift the bodyshell clear of the old chassis. With the body removed, we could strip the mechanical components and inspect them properly.

The same driving conditions that had corroded the original chassis had also affected many of the mechanical parts. We assessed each component, cleaned and painted the parts that could be refurbished, and replaced those that were no longer suitable to reuse.

Preparing the replacement chassis

Once the parts had been inspected, we cleaned, primed and painted the replacement chassis. We also fitted a new galvanised top panel.

Careful preparation matters when replacing a Citroën 2CV chassis. The aim is to protect the replacement structure as well as possible and give the car a solid base for reassembly and future use.

Reassembling the 2CV

After refurbishing or replacing the necessary components, we reassembled the chassis and reunited it with the wheels and engine. The bodyshell was then fitted back onto the completed chassis.

The result is a refreshed Citroën 2CV with a replacement chassis and refurbished or renewed mechanical components where needed. Its new owner can look forward to enjoying the car on the road for many more years, with regular maintenance helping to keep it in good condition.
